At SMIS-English, we do not expect parents to teach full English lessons at home. Instead, a short daily conversation can keep English familiar. Five minutes is easy to fit into a busy family routine. Most importantly, it helps children speak without feeling pressured.
How to apply it in daily life
First, choose a regular time for English. This could be during breakfast, after school, or before bed. Next, ask two or three simple questions. For example, ask, “What did you eat?” or “What was fun today?” Keep the conversation short and positive. Finally, finish while your child is still interested.
Benefits of this practice
Research on spaced practice shows that short, repeated sessions can support long-term memory. They are often more effective than one long practice session. However, five minutes is not a special scientific rule. It is simply a realistic target for busy families.
