Learning Tip 7 – Label Things Around the House

Bring English into your home one word at a time. Everyday objects can become everyday learning opportunities.

How to Apply This Tip in Daily Life

Start with just five familiar objects around the house. Good examples include door, table, chair, window, and fridge. Write the English word clearly on a small label and place it where your child can easily see it.

Do more than simply display the word. Use it naturally in short sentences such as, “Open the door,” “Sit on the chair,” or “Put it on the table.” Encourage your child to say the word when they see or use the object.

After one or two weeks, change some of the labels so your child continues meeting new vocabulary without making the home feel overloaded with words.

Benefits of This Practice

Labels help children connect written English directly to real objects they already know. Seeing the same word regularly can strengthen word recognition and help children understand that written language has a practical purpose outside the classroom.

Research into environmental print suggests that familiar printed words in a child’s surroundings can support early literacy development, including awareness of letters, sounds, and written words.

The greatest benefit comes when labels are combined with conversation. Rather than simply seeing the word door, for example, children hear it, say it, read it, and use it during a real action. This gives them several different ways to remember the vocabulary.

Keeping the number of labels small also helps children focus. A few words that are actively used are usually more valuable than covering the whole house with vocabulary that becomes easy to ignore.

Try This Today

Choose five objects in one room and label them in English.

Then use each word naturally at least once during the day.

For example:

door — “Please close the door.”
chair — “Sit on the chair.”
table — “Put your book on the table.”

Tomorrow, see how many of the five words your child can remember without looking at the labels.
