Homework is designed to reinforce learning completed in class and encourage regular English practice.
Parents can support their child by:
- establishing a regular homework routine
- encouraging independent effort first
- practising spelling and vocabulary
- encouraging regular reading
- checking that homework has been completed
Parents should avoid completing homework for their child.
For more detailed guidance, including information about reading, Raz-Kids and home learning expectations, please refer to the Home Learning section of the Parent Handbook or contact the Manager for more support.
If there are concerns about a child’s current placement, the parent, class teacher and SMIS-English Manager can discuss the available options.
Any decision will consider the best possible outcome for the child as well as what is feasible within the programme.
Factors may include:
- English ability and learning needs
- classroom performance and teacher observations
- current placement
- availability of places
- academic expectations
- social and emotional development
- physical development and maturity
- independence
- suitability of the proposed peer group
A class change is therefore not based on English ability alone.
Where a change is not considered appropriate, other options may include differentiated materials, additional challenge, targeted support or continued observation.
Please refer to the Placement & Progression information in the Parent Handbook, or contact the school if you would like to discuss your child’s placement.
