Kids English Class Curriculum

The SMIS-English Kids Classes follow a professionally developed curriculum that allows students to progress in a carefully planned manner from entrance to graduation at the end of the sixth grade.  The Kids English classes uses a combination of textbook based classes to teach the building blocks of grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing with hands-on activities that give students the opportunity to use English in a practical manner by working and collaborating with their classmates in a variety of challenging yet enjoyable activities.

Literacy

The core of every good English programme is Literacy classes, and all Kids English students have Literacy classes that use the Oxford Phonics World® and Oxford Discover® textbooks to introduce students to new grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, and verbal communication skills through a variety of engaging topics.  The textbook offers a map that lets teachers to highlight important aspects of the textbook and use outside resources such as short videos, reading passages, and writing activities to reenforce and increase students’ understanding of the skills the unit teaches.

Library

Reading is fundamental to learning English and all Kids English Students check out two age and level appropriate books from the St. Michael’s International School library to read at home every Thursday.  This gives students access to thousands of books to choose from and teaches the joy of reading from a young age.  Students also have a variety of reading and writing activities in class to increase their skills in these vital areas of English education.

Projects/Activities

To increase students’ understanding of the skills learned in Literacy classes and help students apply those skills in a practical, but enjoyable, way Kids English students have a variety of short arts, crafts, and hands-on learning activities. These reinforce the target language, vocabulary, and grammar students learn from the textbook and helps students understand the real life application of those skills.
