The SMIS-English After School Kids Classes follow a professionally developed curriculum that allows students to progress in a carefully planned manner from entrance to graduation at the end of the sixth grade. The classes use a combination of textbook based classes to teach the building blocks of grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing with hands-on activities that give students the opportunity to use English in a practical manner by working and collaborating with their classmates in a variety of challenging yet enjoyable activities.

The heart of every strong English programme is a solid approach to literacy. At SMIS-English, our uniquely designed curriculum brings together the essentials of English development with the practical requirements of the EIKEN test. By pairing Oxford’s trusted textbook series with our tailored teaching style, we give children a proven pathway to master phonics, grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, and confident communication.
Our Oxford-based units provide a clear learning map. Teachers use the key points from each unit as a springboard, adding short videos, extra reading passages, writing tasks, and hands-on activities that make learning meaningful and memorable. This blend of structure and creativity helps students strengthen their skills and deepen their understanding with every lesson.

Reading is at the core of successful English learning, and at SMIS-English we make it an exciting part of every child’s week. Each Thursday, students borrow two age and level appropriate books from the St. Michael’s International School library to enjoy at home. With access to thousands of titles, children discover stories that spark curiosity and build a lifelong love of reading.
In class, students also take part in a range of reading and writing activities designed to strengthen comprehension, fluency, and written expression. These experiences help them grow confident in the essential literacy skills that support every stage of English education.

SMIS-English strives to deepen students’ understanding of the skills they learn in Literacy classes. We provide a wide range of short arts, crafts, and hands-on learning activities. These fun and practical tasks allow children to apply newly learned vocabulary, grammar, and target language in meaningful ways. By connecting textbook learning to real-life scenarios, students gain confidence, improve retention, and experience the joy of using English with purpose.
