English for Mommy & Baby

The SMIS-English Mommy & Baby Programme is designed to support children during their earliest input years, when language, movement, and social development grow most naturally. Through play-based learning in a warm and supportive environment, children are gently introduced to English while strengthening the skills they need to move confidently into either an international school English education or the start of a bilingual learning journey.

Language Through Songs, Rhythm, and Repetition

English is introduced through nursery rhymes, songs, stories, and repeated classroom routines. Rhythm and repetition help children naturally absorb English sounds, intonation, and everyday vocabulary in a relaxed, enjoyable way. At this stage, listening and understanding are prioritised, allowing language to develop without pressure.

Movement-Based Learning

Gross motor activities such as action songs, movement games, and guided play help children connect language with physical action. Simple English instructions are reinforced through movement, supporting coordination, body awareness, and early comprehension.

Fine Motor and Sensory Development

Age-appropriate fine motor activities include colouring, simple crafts, sensory play, and hands-on exploration. These activities support hand control, focus, and creativity while introducing basic vocabulary related to colours, shapes, and everyday objects.

Understanding Instructions and Classroom Language

Children are gradually introduced to basic classroom English such as sit down, listen, clean up, and take turns. Learning to follow simple instructions builds confidence, independence, and familiarity with structured learning environments.

Age-Appropriate Learning Stages

Classes are grouped to suit developmental needs.

  • Younger learners (around 1–2 years) focus on exposure, movement, songs, and sensory exploration.
  • Older learners (around 2–3 years) begin to experience slightly more structured activities, expanded vocabulary, early pencil and crayon control, and simple concepts such as counting objects and recognising sounds.

A Formative and Supportive Approach

The programme follows a formative approach, meaning children are not tested or expected to master skills. Teachers observe development, adjust activities, and support each child at their own pace, helping confidence grow naturally.

Preparing for the Next Step

By the end of the Mommy & Baby Programme, children are comfortable with English sounds, routines, and classroom interaction. This strong foundation supports a smooth transition into international school environments, English-medium programmes, or continued bilingual development through SMIS-English pathways such as After School Kids and Saturday School.

The Mommy & Baby Programme is about building confidence, curiosity, and joyful early learning, opening the door to a lifetime of English education.
