Why Speaking More Isn’t Scary for English Learners

Speaking in English can feel intimidating, especially for shy English learners at any age. Nervousness and stress can affect anyone and may even hold back experienced presenters. Yet research shows that regular English speaking practice in low pressure environments helps children build speaking confidence more quickly.

At SMIS-English one of our most effective English learning strategies is to let children practice with a partner before speaking in a larger group.

Pair share activities are simple and highly effective. Before a whole class discussion, we give our students one to two minutes to talk with a partner. This small peer learning routine helps learners organize their thoughts, practice key vocabulary, and reduce speaking anxiety. Over time, even quiet students begin to participate more and show stronger oral communication skills.

You can support English at home in the same way. During the festive holiday season, encourage your child to share something in English with a family member. A favorite decoration, a holiday destination memory, their biggest Christmas gift wish or a traditional food they love can become an easy and meaningful speaking moment. These relaxed conversations build confidence and create natural opportunities to help children speak English.
